Overwatch has big plans for 2017

Blizzard has been hard at work over the past few months with new heroes and new maps, six of which are in development. Three of these maps are ready and past the test phase and they could be coming out this year.

The latest, Oasis, came a few months ago and it’s time for a new place to unleash the carnage. The events, like the King’s Row Uprising, are what’s keeping players at the edge of their keyboards for the time being, but Blizzard’s award-winning game isn’t stopping there.

“We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are "standard" maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.

“We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won't go in QP/Comp).

“We also have a few other experiments going on.

“Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you're looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We'll work as fast as we can!” Jeff Kaplan said in a forum post

What Overwatch is needing is something different. The last map, Oasis, was similar to Illios, Nepal and Lijiang Tower, which differs from the Payload and Capture Point style maps. Kaplan does hint at something different coming in the other three maps, but we will have to wait and see what Blizzard have planned.

It’s important to remember that Blizzard’s one year anniversary is approaching and there is set to be a release and event surrounding it. It could be the next map, or something event bigger.
